A breast cancer screening is recommended at least every two years starting at age 40. Its purpose is to detect and treat cancer at an early stage in order to reduce cancer-related mortality.
Since you will need to undress from the waist up, choose clothing that is easy to remove from the upper body. You will need to remove any necklaces or other jewelry that might interfere with the mammogram. Also, be sure to avoid powders (talcum powder) and deodorants containing aluminum salts on the day of the exam.
If you have sensitive breasts, plan to have the exam within 10 days of the start of your period, and feel free to let the technologist know—she will do her best to make the exam more comfortable for you.
If possible, avoid using deodorant or lotion on the area on the day of the exam, and bring your previous test results—this makes it much easier to compare them.
Each breast is placed between two plates that gently compress it for a few seconds to obtain a clear image.
